Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The M1 helmet is a combat helmet that was used by the United States military from World War II until 1985, when it was succeeded by the PASGT helmet. For over forty years, the M1 was standard issue for the U.S. military. The M1 helmet has become an icon of the American military, with its design inspiring other militaries around the world.
Vietnam War era M-1 helmet shells have a set of swivel (movable) chinstrap loops called bales and a stainless steel rim. These rims were both rust resistant and had non-magnetic qualities that reduced the chance of error readings when placed around certain sensitive equipment (such as a compass).
This helmet is a fine example and still retains all of its original Vietnam War parts and the shell has all original corked grain paint. The cover appears to have been heavily used and shows all the signs of being a worn in country example. There appears to be no intentional abuse done to the cover/helmet, but this was definitely worn in the suck and the cosmetic appearance reflects that. There are holes and tears around the rim, flaps and is hardened in areas.
The flap does have stampings present which is how we determined the 1968 date, however, we do not want to keep removing the liner and moving the flaps around to read off the whole stamp. All components have been together since the war and we do not want to risk damaging any pieces, it’s better to preserve the history of this item in its current state.
The liner is correct high pressure 1960s issue liner with all markings faded due to sweat and wear. The rigging is intact and in great shape, with faint original markings visible on the sweat band, and just a bit of cracking on the sweat band leather. The liner itself shows honest wear in a hot, humid, environment, but is in good condition overall.
The original elastic foliage band comes with the helmet, and is in place just as we found it.
These helmets have become increasingly difficult to find in recent years, especially ones with complete wartime dated parts. Almost certainly to appreciate in value year after year!
