Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous example of a Purple Heart, especially intriguing due to the printed research and interview that comes with it. It’s named to Felipe Ramirez, who served with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment and the 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, Americal Division. Ramirez was awarded two Purple Heart Medals and two Bronze Star Medals.
The medal is in great order with the proper engraving for this period, FELIPE / RAMIREZ. The printed information includes a photo of Ramirez in uniform, and a photo of him years later in his Veterans’ cap when the interview was taken.
Ramirez was born on March 7th, 1949 in Laredo, Texas. The interview was taken on February 26th, 2011. It starts with “A bullet in his chest and scars on his stomach were lifelong reminders of Felipe Ramirez’s Vietnam War experience. The first round of bullets hit the machine gun. Before I knew it, I was hit. I felt something. I took a big dive and went behind a tree and said to another soldier, “I’m OK, I’m OK”.
Ramirez had a friend from high school killed in combat, and he thought volunteering to go to war was a way to get revenge. “I wanted to go kill a couple of Vietnamese. Back then, that’s how I was thinking about war.” His main duty was to be a machine gunner.
Ramirez was shot by an AK-47 carried by a VietCong soldier. He served for two years, and his injuries were too severe for a second tour. He was treated in Japan and sent home, being discharged in August 1971.
Ramirez then goes into talks about his PTSD from the war. “You never forget war. To me, it was like yesterday, I never forget.”
It isn’t often we get a Purple Heart with as amazing of a backstory as this. Comes ready for further research and display!
