Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a great small photo album owned by Colonel Francis C. Conaty, who served as a Ranger advisor during the 1964-1965 period, before and during the U.S. declaration of war on Vietnam.
The album has 26 photographs and is named Col. Francis C. Conaty on the interior cover. There are several photos in the field, but most appear to be stateside. There are many photos of Vietnamese soldiers and citizens with American rations and assistance, then a photo of a treehouse and some of boats in Vietnam. A very lovely album, measuring 3 ½ x 4 ½”.
When Conaty arrived in Vietnam, he was the Deputy Commander of the “Tropic Lightning” Division’s 196th Light Infantry Brigade (Separate), and served as the Senior Advisor for the 9th Vietnamese Infantry Division in 1964 and 1965 and as an infantry advisor in Turkey during the Korean conflict. During WWII, Conaty commanded a mechanized cavalry unit in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Conaty was made commander of the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division in November 1966. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for Valor and oak leaf cluster, the Purple Heart and Air Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters.
The only son of Lt. Col. and Mrs. Francis S. Conaty, Colonel Francis C. Conaty was born in Rockville, IL on May 15, 1920. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 66 years, Carol Clayton Conaty. He is survived by their six children, Mrs. Patricia McNamara, Mrs. Ceci Dittmar, Mr. Chip Conaty, Mr. Phil Conaty, Mr. Pete Conaty, and Mrs. Peggy Pisciotta and their respective spouses. Additionally he had 16 grandchildren, 21 great- grandchildren and a large extended family, all of whom were treasured dearly. He proudly served 30 years in the US Army, a veteran of WWII and the Vietnam War. A true patriot, he is a hero and inspiration to all who knew and loved him. He was buried at Arlington Cemetery.
