Original Item: Only One Available. This is a complete U.S. M1 helmet setup from the Vietnam War period, retaining its steel helmet shell, liner and suspension, Mitchell Pattern camouflage cover, elastic camouflage band, sweatband, and chinstrap components.
The M1 helmet remained the standard American combat helmet through the Vietnam War, although the appearance of the helmet had changed considerably from its WWII configuration. During the Vietnam period, the steel shell was commonly fitted with a reversible camouflage cover. The example present on this helmet is the familiar Mitchell Pattern type, worn here with the predominantly green side outward. The cover incorporates the horizontal foliage slits characteristic of the pattern, which permitted the addition of vegetation and other local camouflage material.
The camouflage cover remains substantially intact and shows only minor wear from age and use. The colors are still visible, with contrasting shades of green and brown forming the large irregular camouflage pattern. There is scattered staining, surface wear, small holes, fraying to a number of the foliage slits, and heavier wear around portions of the lower edge. Fitted around the lower portion of the cover is an olive drab elastic helmet camouflage band. The back of the cover has a contract stamp, but it is not dated.
The liner is the Vietnam-period type with a greenish laminated body and olive drab web suspension. It retains the leather-covered sweatband, web suspension, neck suspension components, and associated metal hardware. The suspension shows wear, but is solid overall.
This complete, Vietnam War-era U.S. M1 helmet assembly preserves the essential components that defined the iconic silhouette of American military headgear throughout the conflict.
