  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a totally inert/deactivated example of the 81mm M56 Mortar Round. The device has no explosive filling or charges and cannot be converted to be an explosive device. This is completely inert and in compliance with BATF guidelines on inert ordnance. Not Available For Export.

The 81 mm Mortar was extensively used during the Vietnam War. This example appears to have been originally a WWII Shell which was emptied and used for training during the Vietnam Period. This example is stamped in yellow on the body:

    81MM
    TNT
    CTG M56

And stamped directly on the body:

    LOT-113 USM 1944 81MM M56

And stamped on the upper body:

    EMPTY
    2-25-54

The M56 was the heaviest of the US military 81mm types used during WWII, with an overall weight of 16 lbs with a maximum range of 1,300 yards. The round was effective against both personnel and materiel in the field. It is used against dugouts, barricades, and underground structures where a mining action is desired. This shell is a much more effective one than the M45 due to the fact that it contains approximately 40 percent explosive filler as compared to 30 percent explosive filler of the M45. The greater the percentage of explosive filler, without sacrificing the penetrating ability of the shell body, the more effective is the shell when used for mining effect.

The shell measures roughly 22¾” and has a 1953-dated fuze. A great piece perfect for any ordnance collection.
