Original U.S. Vietnam War Homefront Anti-War Protest Decorated WWII Firestone High Pressure M1 Helmet Liner

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War began with demonstrations in 1965 against the escalating role of the United States in the Vietnam War and grew into a broad social movement over the ensuing several years. This movement informed and helped shape the vigorous and polarizing debate, primarily in the United States, during the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s on how to end the Vietnam War. Many would often wear their own personal military items (if veterans) or they would go to surplus shops, use items in their possession already and decorate them with anti-war sentiment, much like this WWII Firestone M1 helmet liner.

This is a nice example of a M1 helmet liner turned protest item. The liner exterior was repainted in a flat black color with yellow paint for the WAR IS HELL marking on the back Peace Sign on the sides.

The liner is painted white and is the correct “high pressure” WWII issue and stamped with an F logo over F7 for the FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY Manufactured in Akron, Ohio this “high pressure” manufactured M-1 helmet liner is identified by an embossed “F” in the crown. Firestone Tire and Rubber Company started M-1 helmet liner delivery to the US Army in September 1942. They produced approximately 7,500,000 M-1 helmet liners and discontinued production around August 17 1945 when the war ended. The liner outer paint is nice, and does not appear to have been repainted.

This true US WWII M-1 helmet liner can be identified through the frontal eyelet hole. Other correct WWII features include OD Green #3 cotton herringbone twill (HBT) cloth suspension liner, with the webbing in fair shape. This HBT suspension is still held tightly within the M-1 helmet liner by rivets and a series of triangular "A" washers. The three upper suspension bands are joined together with a string. This way the wearer could adjust the fit. The sweatband is still present, showing extensive material loss and cracking.

A great example ready for further research and display.
