Original U.S. Vietnam War GBU-12 Guided Bomb Unit & Nose Cone Assembly for Use with Mark 82 Bomb - Inert

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a tremendous piece of ordnance history, a Vietnam War-dated GBU-12 & Nose Cone Assembly for use with the Mark 82 500-pound general purpose bomb. The set has an EOD Sticker denoting it as Inert. Like all deactivated ordnance, this set is Not Available for Export.

The set consists of the Guided Bomb Control DCU-191-B, the Bomb Guidance Computer CPU-101 B/B, and the Laser Illumination Detector DSU-7/B. The set measures roughly 45½” tall, and is about 18 1/2" between the ends of the two longer fins. This set could be used for a myriad of different munitions including the GBU-12 Paveway II, Paveway III, and Paveway IV, but the fins are specifically marked:

FOR USE ON MK-82

Two of the four fins are missing half of their length, but from the design it appears that they are meant to be broken off if needed. The two that are retained read SLOW SPEED ONLY. The side of the body reads:

COMPUTER,
BOMB GUIDANCE, CPU-101 B/B
(ASSY) 96214-700897-1
SER. NO. 46053
DATE MFG. 8-72

And near the bottom:

CONTROL, GUIDED BOMB
DCU-191/B
(ASSY) 96214-608432-1
SERIAL NO. 46053
DATE MFG. 8-72

This dates the device to August 1972, perfect for Vietnam War use! The device on top is marked:

DETECTOR, LASER
ILLUMINATION, DSU-7/B
(ASSY) 96214-614062-2
SERIAL NO. 46053

The detector still swivels as intended. This is a phenomenal piece of technology, the first of its kind we have ever offered, and possibly the last. Comes ready for further research and display.

The Mark 82 is a 500-pound (230 kg) unguided, low-drag general-purpose bomb, part of the United States Mark 80 series. The explosive filling is usually tritonal, though other compositions have sometimes been used.

With a nominal weight of 500 lb (230 kg), it is one of the smallest bombs in current service, and one of the most common air-dropped weapons in the world. Although the Mk82's nominal weight is 500 lb (230 kg), its actual weight varies depending on its configuration, from 510 to 570 lb (230 to 260 kg). It is a streamlined steel casing containing 192 lb (87 kg) of Tritonal high explosive. The Mk82 is offered with a variety of fin kits, fuzes, and retarders for different purposes.

The Mk82 is the warhead for the GBU-12 laser-guided bombs and for the GBU-38 JDAM. Over many years Nitro-Chem in Bydgoszcz, Poland was the only provider of certified TNT for U.S. Department of Defense.[7] As of 2021 also the General Dynamics plant in Garland, Texas was providing bombs for the US Armed Forces.
