  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful example of an 81mm M374 HE round for the M29 Mortar System. This round cannot be rendered live again to be used as an explosive device and is in complete compliance per the current regulations set out by the BATF.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

The M29 is an American-produced 81 millimeter mortar. It began replacing the M1 mortar in U.S. service in 1952 being lighter and with greater range. It was subsequently replaced by the M252 mortar in 1987. Variants included the M29E1 and M29A1, adopted in 1964. These were produced with a hard chrome-plated bore to prolong barrel life and ease of cleaning.

The maximum rate of fire is 30 rounds for the first minute followed by 4 to 12 rounds per additional minute. The range is 5,140 yards. The weapon was usually serviced by a crew of five. The normal crew consisted of a squad leader, a gunner, an assistant gunner and two ammunition handlers.

The round itself is in excellent condition and retains almost all of the original OD Green paint with minor handling wear present, and the yellow stencils on the body are clear as well, indicating loading during 12-67 for December 1967, a great early year. The round still retains clear manufacturing stamps on the body which identifies this round as a HE 81 MM M374 round and is dated ALR-2-1-1965 next to this. The tail fin assembly is marked as being M149 and is marked GYR-8-49-67 to the left of this, indicating 1967 production. The fin assembly can still be unscrewed, and there is even a spent propellant charge present, dated 3-67! The fuse assembly is marked:

    FUZE, PD, M524A5
    MA-62-16    12-67

The body has an interesting red label warning about not using more than five increments when firing an 81mm mortar. These would be attached to the metal tabs on the tail assembly.

The round comes complete in its original transit husk container which is embossed on the top and bottom lid 10-70 81MM MORTAR CONTAINER M252A4 CEN F. The husk measures just under 22”, and the round measures 20¾”.

This is a wonderful example of a genuine 1967-dated Vietnam War 81mm Mortar Round in its husk! Comes ready for further research and display.
