Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a fantastic offering! This is a Randall Model 12 “Confederate Bowie” as made by the famed Randall knife company in Orlando, Florida. Randall knives are hand made with forged blades. Their quality is almost unparalleled. Besides quality, Randall knives have serious cachet. They're like the Rolex of the knife world, everyone knows their name and wants to own one, this being a great example!
This is a wonderful example of a Randall No 12 Fighting Knife and the first one we have had the pleasure of offering. The Model #12-11 Confederate and Model 12-13" Raymond Thorp are similar types used by Confederate troops.
The knife itself is in great condition without any extensive damage present. Randall Made Knives, usually referred to as Randall, is an American custom handcrafted knife manufacturer founded by Walter Doane "Bo" Randall, Jr. in the U.S. The knife making shop and showroom is located in Orlando, Florida. Randall began making knives as a hobby in 1937. His son and grandson continue the family trade along with 20 craftsmen producing about 8,000 knives per year out of a shop on South Orange Blossom Trail.
Randall offers 28 models of knives for different applications, each customizable at the factory based on customer specification. Randall hand forges nearly all models of knives instead of using factory stamping or stock removal, one of few manufacturers to do so. Randall uses a 17-step process for making knives, which usually takes over 8 hours to complete. The waiting list for obtaining a Randall from the shop is typically six years.
Two examples of Randall's Model 17 "Astro", designed for the use of astronauts, are on display in the Smithsonian Institution. The company operates its own museum containing more than 7,000 knives and other edged weapons, including one of the world's largest collections of pocket knives.
The knife measures 16 3/4 inches overall, with an 11 inch carbon steel blade, outfitted with a 1 5/8 inch wide sharpened edge and the scimitar flanked address reading "RANDALL MADE/ORLANDO, FLA." on the left side of the blade.
The knife has a brass crossguard with red, tan, and black spacers on either side of the leather washer grip, an aluminum pommel cap and a hexagonal pommel nut. Condition is good overall, the blade has crisp original polish with an overall bright finish with staining and minor wear. The guard has an attractive, aged patina with some small scratches and dings, and heavy verdigris on the crossguard. The grip shows some scratches but is in good shape overall.
The knife comes with its original leather scabbard which has chromed snaps, and is stamped on the back of the belt loop:
RANDALL MADE
KNIVES
ORLANDO, FLA.
12 11C
The 12 11C denotes that this was for a Model 12 Knife with an 11 inch blade. The sheath still retains the original whetstone, very rare to see!
The original Randall “Roughback” Sheath is fine with tight stitching, attractive original russet brown finish, intact chrome closure strap, and functional chrome snap on the whetstone pouch. Overall, the leather is in very good order, and is nice and pliable.
A lovely, hard to find example ready for further research and display.
