  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very attractive U.S. M1 helmet assembled in a Vietnam War-era configuration, complete with its steel helmet shell, reversible Mitchell-pattern camouflage cover, olive-drab elastic helmet band, and liner. The setup presents very well as a Vietnam-period helmet, although the liner currently contains September 1984-dated suspension and the steel shell is fitted with a reproduction WWII-style chinstrap, both of which are important later additions.

The M1 helmet remained the standard American combat helmet through the Vietnam War, although the appearance of the helmet had changed considerably from its WWII configuration. During the Vietnam period, the steel shell was commonly fitted with a reversible camouflage cover. The example present on this helmet is the familiar Mitchell Pattern type, worn here with the predominantly green side outward. The cover incorporates the horizontal foliage slits characteristic of the pattern, which permitted the addition of vegetation and other local camouflage material.

The camouflage cover remains substantially intact but shows tearing and fraying along the edge from wear. The colors are still visible, with contrasting shades of green and brown forming the large irregular camouflage pattern. There is scattered staining, surface wear, small holes, fraying to a number of the foliage slits, and heavier wear around portions of the lower edge. Fitted around the lower portion of the cover is an olive drab elastic helmet camouflage band. The back of the cover has a contract stamp, but no date. The shell has been applied with a reproduction WWII era chinstrap, fine for display.

The liner is a Vietnam War era P4 example but with 1980s suspension, marked on the suspension as dated September 1984. Otherwise it is a good display example for the Vietnam period.

The combination of the M1 steel shell, reversible Mitchell-pattern camouflage cover displayed green-side outward, olive-drab elastic helmet band, P4 liner shell, later 1984-dated suspension, and reproduction chinstrap makes this a strong Vietnam-period display example while retaining an accurate distinction between the original-era components and later replacements.
