Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original U.S. Vietnam War-era M1 helmet complete with a reversible Mitchell Pattern camouflage cover dated 1976, and a WWII-manufactured Westinghouse high-pressure liner that was depot refurbished with dark green Vietnam-era suspension, and worn by a Captain in the 412th Engineer Command. The complete helmet shows honest field wear and has the highly desirable appearance associated with an original Vietnam service helmet.
The M1 helmet remained the standard combat helmet of the United States military throughout the Vietnam War. It consisted of a manganese-steel outer shell and a separate removable liner containing the suspension and sweatband. Large stocks of WWII-manufactured shells and liners continued to be refurbished and reissued alongside later-production components, resulting in the mixed-period assemblies commonly encountered in genuine Vietnam War helmets.
The steel shell is the correct swivel-bale pattern and retains its green painted finish. The exterior shows expected scratches, scuffs, paint wear, staining, and handling marks consistent with military service.
The shell is fitted with a reversible Mitchell Pattern camouflage cover. This distinctive camouflage cover became closely associated with American troops serving in Vietnam and has a predominantly green jungle pattern on one side and a brown-dominant pattern on the reverse. The cover is marked with a contract stamp on the back, dated 1976.
An original elastic helmet band remains fitted around the camouflage cover. The band helps secure the cover to the shell and could also be used to hold foliage, identification cards, insect repellent, cigarettes, or other small field items.
The liner is a WWII Westinghouse example marked with the logo under 104, the lot number. The suspension is the correct dark green Vietnam War era with a good sweatband. There is no liner chinstrap.
Original Vietnam War period helmets with genuine Mitchell Pattern covers have become increasingly difficult to locate. This one dates to after the war, with an interesting liner worthy of further research.
