This is an excellent original U.S. Navy Mk 15 Mod 4 100-pound practice bomb, manufactured in October 1966 and retaining its original blue practice-bomb finish and factory stenciling. Designed for aerial bombing training, the Mk 15 Mod 4 was a light-cased Navy practice bomb that could be filled with water or wet sand to approximate operational bomb weight and was fitted with an impact-operated pyrotechnic spotting signal to mark the point of impact.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are NOT considered NFA weapons. This is a Cold War/Vietnam War-era inert Mk 15 Mod 4 Practice Bomb as used by the US Navy for aerial bombing training. It is inert, and would be filled with sand or water. A flash tube, which would extend throughout its transverse axis, would house a pyrotechnic signal and firing pin assembly to detonate upon impact to mark its landing relative to the target.

The Mk 15 is made of welded sheet metal. The empty weight is approximately 17 lbs. When filled with water (4.55 gallons) it weighs approximately 56 lbs, and 95 lbs when filled with wet sand. Under freezing conditions, a mixture of antifreeze could be used instead of water. The overall length is 41 inches with a diameter of 8 inches.

These bombs are impact fired signal-generating, practice bombs used for training aircrews.

The original finish is especially desirable because many surviving Mk 15 practice bombs have subsequently been stripped, repainted, or converted into decorative objects.

The Mk 15 Mod 4 represents an interesting continuation of a Navy practice-bomb design that originated before WWII but remained useful through the jet age. This October 1966 example dates directly to the period of intensive U.S. Navy aviation operations during the Vietnam War, when realistic bombing practice remained an essential part of aircrew training.
