Original Item: Only One Available. This is an exemplary Vietnam War Era "Infantry P64" helmet liner that was painted for the use of a member of the 723rd Military Police Company, which is a subordinate unit of the 165th Military Police Battalion. The 273rd Military Police Company was established on December 3, 1946, and was federally recognized as Company C, 163rd Military Police Battalion. During the aftermath of the Korean War, the company was ordered into active federal service until July 2, 1952. On February 1, 1974, the company was renamed as the 274th Military Police Company. The unit participated in federal service in both the first and second Gulf Wars, as well as the Global War on Terror, until September 1, 2007, when the 274th Military Police Company and other elements were amalgamated into the newly created 273rd Military Police Company. Under the new guidon of the 273rd Military Police Company, the unit made its return to the battlefield in 2012, once again deploying in support of the Global War on Terror.
A new suspension system for the M1 Helmet Liner was introduced in 1964. The new system featured three webbing straps that could each be adjusted to hold the liner at the right height on the head. The liner also had a new neck band assembly, which consisted of a rectangular webbed body with three straps that attached to small buckles inside the liner. The P64 Infantry liner was also the first version not to have a leather chin strap.
Between 1964 and 1969 the new helmet liner was made from laminated cotton duck. However, the P64 liner was also produced in laminated high strength nylon fabric between 1964 and 1974. The nylon helmet liner offered improved ballistic protection and was 2 to 3 oz heavier than the cotton duck version.1
During the Vietnam War, some units such as the Military Police, would wear liners without helmets, as shown in this example. The helmet was painted black with white markings to make them more visible from a distance. It features a standard white band around the circumference, with the Company (273) on the left side, and the Auxilium Gladius Est crest of the 165th Military Police Battalion on the right. Additionally, the standard "MP" was also applied on the front.
This particular M1 helmet liner is a true gem for collectors and enthusiasts alike. It has been impeccably preserved and boasts a stunning exterior that is free of any significant damage or wear to the paint. The liner radiates a sense of authenticity and history that would be a prized addition to any collection. It is an excellent opportunity for military police collectors or anyone interested in the history of military headgear. With its great condition, this M1 helmet liner is more than ready to be researched, admired, and displayed for all to see!
