Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a really tremendous grouping to Captain William E. McGee, 73rd Aviation Company, who flew over 400 combat missions in both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft during the Vietnam War, rescuing wounded American and Vietnamese soldiers while under intense enemy fire. The group includes his engraved Air Medal with a V for Valor device in its original presentation case along with a copy of his book, “Men of Granite: True Stories of New Hampshire’s Fighting Men” which he presented to his Commanding Officer, Colonel John Kark.
The medal is in great shape with the V for Valor device on the medal brooch and ribbon. The pin is also intact inside as well. The case is correct for Vietnam War medals.
William E. McGee’s Men of Granite: True Stories of New Hampshire’s Fighting Men is a war-by-war compendium of brief profiles of soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen who were born in the Granite State. McGee, who flew more than 400 combat helicopter missions in Vietnam as an Army pilot and went on to become an editor of Army Aviation magazine, provides short introductions to each war, followed by the profiles. The Vietnam War personnel profiled in the book are Army Gen. Melvin Zais, Army Special Forces Lt. Col. William C Hazen, and USAF First Lt. Howard Walker Kaiser, who was killed in Vietnam in 1966. The book measures 6 x 9”.
A great grouping, ready for further research and display.
