  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an exceptional original U.S. Vietnam War-era group of eight New Old Stock jungle hats with insect nets, manufactured by Metz of California under a 1969 Defense Supply Agency contract and retained together in their original military shipping carton. The hats remain unused and unissued, with each still accompanied by its original insect net and packaging.

The shipping box is marked on the side:

    8415-935-28 85
HAT, JUNGLE W/INSECT NET, CTN W/R POPLIN
    R-S WEAVE, QUARPEL TREATED OG-107
    12 EA    SIZE 6 ⅜
    DSA100-69-C-2295
    A 12-70 / 69

This dates them to December 1970. Each hat retains the insect net and a tag reading:

HAT, JUNGLE W/INSECT NET, CTN W/R POPLIN
    R-S WEAVE, QUARPEL TREATED OG-107
    DSA100-69-C-2295
    8415-935-28 85
    METZ OF CALIFORNIA
    SIZE 6 ⅜

The jungle hat became one of the most recognizable items of American field headgear during the Vietnam War. Its wide brim provided protection from sun and rain, while ventilation and lightweight construction made it better suited to tropical conditions than conventional field caps. Versions incorporating insect nets provided an additional layer of protection in environments where mosquitoes and other insects were a constant problem.

The survival of the original shipping carton, eight matching Metz of California hats, individual contract labels, insect nets, plastic packaging, size markings, and December 1970 carton date makes this an especially complete Vietnam War-era field gear grouping. The carton’s original quantity marking of twelve also documents that four hats are no longer present, while the remaining eight constitute an unusually well-preserved factory and supply grouping.
