This is an original U.S. Vietnam War 2nd Pattern poplin jungle fatigue shirt retaining period-applied U.S. Air Force Security Police insignia, including locally made “in-country” Vietnamese embroidery. Named to Canchola, the shirt bears Technical Sergeant rank insignia and shows the kind of long-term patch application and wear expected from a uniform that saw actual service.
Original Vietnam jungle fatigues retaining their wartime insignia have become increasingly difficult to find, especially examples with locally manufactured Vietnamese patches. On this shirt, the reverse of the insignia shows visible bunching and pulling of the fabric where the patches have remained sewn in place for an extended period. This is consistent with period application rather than recent restoration.

A U.S. Air Force Security Police insignia is sewn to the left breast pocket. The sleeves carry Technical Sergeant rank insignia.
The combination of U.S. Air Force tapes, Security Police insignia, and Technical Sergeant chevrons identifies this as a uniform associated with Air Force security personnel serving during the Vietnam War. Security Police units were responsible for protecting air bases, aircraft, personnel, weapons, and other critical installations, duties that became especially important at bases vulnerable to enemy ground attack, sabotage, and infiltration.
The Vietnamese-made insignia is particularly appealing. American servicemen frequently purchased locally produced name tapes, patches, and other insignia from tailors near bases throughout South Vietnam. These locally made pieces vary considerably in thread, construction, lettering, and color and are today commonly referred to by collectors as “in-country” insignia.
The shirt is an original 2nd Pattern poplin jungle fatigue example. Its original collar label is no longer present, although the instruction label remains sewn into the lower interior.
Overall, the shirt displays very well and retains the period-applied insignia that gives an original jungle fatigue much of its collector interest. The surviving CANCHOLA name tape also offers excellent potential for further research into the original Technical Sergeant and his Air Force Security Police service.
