Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice condition U.S. Army Type I OG-107 Utility Shirt attributed to a Lieutenant Colonel named Smith, with a particularly interesting assortment of period applied insignia associated with Vietnam service.
The Type I OG-107 utility uniform was introduced in 1952 and remained essentially unchanged through its production life until it was superseded by the Type II pattern beginning in 1963. The Type I shirt is readily recognized by its straight sleeves without adjustable button cuffs, rectangular flapped chest pockets, and early dished buttons.
Earlier production shirts generally used dark brown buttons such as those seen on this example, while later production increasingly used dark green buttons. OG-107 uniforms were sized in general groupings rather than the more detailed sizing systems seen on some later military clothing.
Although this is an earlier pattern shirt, OG-107 uniforms remained in use well beyond their original production dates, and earlier examples continued to appear during the Vietnam War.
Above the right breast pocket is a standard:
U.S. ARMY
tape, while the opposite side is named:
SMITH
The left shoulder carries a theater made 1st Field Force insignia, identifying the wearer with I Field Force, Vietnam, one of the major U.S. Army field commands operating in South Vietnam.
The right shoulder carries a 2nd Infantry Division shoulder sleeve insignia, indicating previous wartime service with that formation in the customary former wartime service position.
The collar carries Lieutenant Colonel rank insignia together with an additional star shaped cloth insignia whose exact significance we have not been able to confirm from the available information.
Above the left breast pocket is a cloth CBI insignia positioned over a set of Master Army Aviator wings. Beneath the U.S. Army tape is a cloth set of Parachutist wings.
The combination of aviator and parachutist insignia suggests a highly experienced officer with both aviation and airborne qualifications, although without accompanying service records we cannot identify the precise career history of Lieutenant Colonel Smith.
All of the original buttons remain present.
The interior is stamped:
26X
which is likely a size or issue marking.
The 1st Field Force, Vietnam, originally designated I Field Force, Vietnam, exercised operational control over U.S. Army units in the II Corps Tactical Zone during much of the war. Its area of responsibility included the Central Highlands and large portions of central South Vietnam, making it one of the most significant American field commands of the conflict.
This is a particularly interesting Vietnam War officer’s utility shirt, combining an early Type I OG-107 garment with a theater made 1st Field Force patch, Lieutenant Colonel rank, 2nd Infantry Division former wartime service insignia, aviation and parachutist qualification badges, and the named SMITH tape.
