Original U.S. Unmarked 12 Bore Double Laminated Steel Barrel Percussion Fowling Piece with Highly Figured Stock - circa 1850

Regular price $995.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very interesting U.S. Market double barrel 12 bore fowling piece, made very much in the British / European style. The only marking on the entire gun is Fine Laminated Steel in gothic letters on the top of the barrel, indicating that the barrels are forged from Laminated or "Damascus" steel. Otherwise, it is completely unmarked, even under the barrel, and was built with a fantastic highly figured walnut stock, which is almost "burl" in areas. It is all iron mounted, and looks to be a relatively utilitarian example, with no engraving on any of the fittings. It is also possible that it was intended to be marked and decorated by the retail, as with many import fowlers.

We do not know if it was made in Europe, England, or in the U.S., where it would most likely have been made by one of the numerous German immigrants working as gunsmiths in the Pennsylvania area. The gun has an overall length of 47 3/4 inches, with double 32 1/4 inch barrels. The laminated steel pattern is still easily visible on the bottom of the barrels, and there is an area of polished out oxidation on the left side, where the pattern is clearly visible.

Overall condition is very good, with a great lightly used look and the fantastic figuring in the stock, which has a high amount of chatoyancy. There is just a small sliver of wood missing on the left side under the barrel, with no other damage we can see. The metalwork is in great shape, showing a lovely lightly aged patina and traces of case hardening on the lock plates, now faded from age and wear. Both locks are fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full, and the cap nipple cones look original, though the right side cone is damaged. The brass fitted cleaning rod is original, and even has what looks to be a clearing worm attachment on the smaller end, however the cover is stuck on.

A typical example of what many Americans carried on the frontier, in lovely condition and ready to display!
