Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very interesting U.S. Market double barrel 12 bore fowling piece, made very much in the German style. It is completely unmarked, even under the barrel, and was built with a lovely figured stock, which features a German style cheek piece on the left side. It is all iron mounted except for the barrel wedge escutcheons, and the trigger guard is made from carved wood, which we have seen on other German examples from this period.
We do not know if it was made in Europe, or in the U.S., most likely by one of the numerous German immigrants working as gunsmiths in the Pennsylvania area. It shows a very high level of craftsmanship in the wood stock, while the metal fittings are not engraved, so it is very likely they were purchased separately from the gun trade, as w3ith many makers of the period. They were usually left unmarked so that the purchaser could mark them himself. The gun has an overall length of 48 inches, with double 32 inch barrels.
Overall condition is good, with strong checkering around the wrist, and the fantastic figure in the stock. The metalwork is in very good shape, showing a lovely aged brown oxidized patina, now faded from age and wear. Both locks are fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full. The cleaning rod / ramrod is definitely old, but it may be a period replacement. It currently will get stuck in the upper ramrod pipe if pushed in too far.
A typical example of what many Americans carried on the frontier, in lovely condition and ready to display!
