MODEL
1884
Offered in excellent condition is this trapdoor rifle in .45-70 government caliber, complete with original issue bayonet and scabbard. Serial # 392641 with a partly, overall good metal finish. The serial number indicates production in 1888 and the stock is in good original condition. There are some small chips and dents as expected on a rifle this age, but the stock does not appear to have had any major repairs. The stock has been sanded down at bit, as the stock is even with the level of the lock plate. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, and is mostly bright, though the area near the muzzle appears to have been exposed to water, so it is mostly dark.
Both barrel bands are "U" marked. Metal finish shows some traces of past pitting, and a lot of the fittings show traces of pitting as well. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., two bands, two sling swivels (stacking swivel is missing), Buffington sight, and standard ramrod. Lock is marked with an eagle and US SPRINGFIELD, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.
The included socket bayonet has some of the original blued finish, though it has some rust, and is marked U.S. on the ricasso. Overall it is in good condition, and attaches well to the rifle. The scabbard is dent free, and has a good amount of the original finish left. The attached swivel frog is solid, though the leather has cracked, and has a U.S. marked rosette on the hinge joint.
The upper right corner of the Buffington sight leaf is marked R to indicate that the sight graduations are for a rifle and not a carbine.
