Original U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Model 1873 Rifle made in 1879 marked Property of Kansas - Serial No 104531

Item Description

Original Item: Only One available. This is a very nice example of the classic Springfield trapdoor rifle, the weapon used, in its carbine form, by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:

U.S.
MODEL
1873

Offered in excellent condition is this trapdoor rifle in .45-70 government caliber, Serial # 104531, with overall good metal finish with most proofs still present. The serial number indicates production in 1879, and the stock is in good original condition. There are some dents in the wood, as expected on a rifle this age, and there is a crack and missing chunk around the barrel tang. The stock has definitely been sanded down, as the lock plate is above the level of the stock. The bore is in good condition, with a mostly bright finish, and clear lands and grooves. There is a little corrosion and powder fouling, but nothing major.

The butt plate is marked U.S. and both barrel bands are U marked. There is also a stamped state ownership marking behind the rear sight: PROPERTY OF STATE OF KANSAS. Many Springfield Trapdoor rifles were shipped to States for use during the frontier period, and this may be one that was sent at that time.

Metal finish is a dull gray patina, with the peppery look of past pitting, however it is still solid. Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., two bands, two sling swivels with stacking swivel, standard sliding sight, and standard ramrod. Lock is marked with an eagle and US SPRINGFIELD, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.

Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel:  a V over a P over an eagle's head over another P on the left side just above the stock. There is also an I over the chamber. The upper right corner of the standard sliding sight leaf and the left side of the ramp are marked R to indicate that the sight graduations are for a rifle and not a carbine. Sight is in very good condition.

This is a great example of a service used Springfield Trapdoor rifle, complete with bayonet and scabbard, ready to add to your collection.
