Original U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Model 1873 Cavalry Carbine made in 1888 - Serial No 413070

Item Description

Original Item: Only One available. This is an excellent example of the classic Springfield trapdoor Cavalry Carbine, the weapon used by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:

U.S.
MODEL
1873

Offered in very good condition is this trapdoor carbine is in .45-70 government caliber, with serial # 413070 stamped on the rear of the receiver. The marking is somewhat faint, but we are fairly certain about the number. The carbine has overall good metal finish with all proofs still present. The serial number indicates production in 1888, a bit late for a model 1873, but the models were made concurrently. It has the correct two part trigger guard, smooth trigger, and standard siding sight of the model 1873. The stock is in good original condition, though it has been worn and sanded down, so all of the stock markings have been removed, and the stock is below the level of the lock plate. This carbine definitely saw significant service.

The bore is in good condition, with clear lands and grooves and a mostly bright finish. There are some rust areas near the muzzle of the barrel, but nothing major.

The butt plate is marked U.S. and the barrel band is U marked. Metal finish is a very nice, with a great faded plum color.  Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., single band, no sling swivels, and a standard rear ladder sight. Lock is marked with an eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.

Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel: an R on top of the chamber, and a V over a P over an eagle's head over another P on the left side just above the stock. There is also a C on the sight ladder, indicating that it is for a Carbine and not a rifle.

This is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very rare and early example of a Springfield Trapdoor Carbine. Ready to display!
