Original U.S. Springfield Trapdoor M1866 Converted Rifle Socket Bayonet with Massachusetts Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a Springfield Trapdoor Converted Rifle bayonet, complete with an original scabbard. We have tested it on an M1866 Trapdoor conversion, and it fits great. We assume it will work with other trapdoor conversion models.

The U.S. Civil war had confirmed the adage of NEED is the Mother of INVENTION. Muzzle Loading Muskets and Rifles were extensively used but new developments continually resulted in a "fresh" breach loading system being adopted on a trial basis. The Union had as many as NINETEEN different systems issued during the war and the ALLIN system was a version that was considered a determination was made to standardize.

The Trapdoor system seemed to be the one that satisfied most authorities so more trials were held, and the trapdoor was adopted. The government then looked for for cost effective ways to modernize their rifles, and one way was to convert muzzle loading Rifle muskets to a breech loaders, as seen throughout the world.

The 1866 Trapdoor was made using a Civil War percussion Rifle which was made into a breech loader using a .50 cal barrel. and each years the system was improved until the finish result was the Model of 1873 which was adopted and remained until the Krag Rifle was introduced in the 1890s.

This example is very good, with a lovely faded bright steel finish, as these were not blued like the later 1873 Trapdoor bayonets. The socket is not deformed at all, with a smooth moving lock, which we have tested on an original Springfield Trapdoor 1866 rifle.

The bayonet comes complete with its original steel scabbard, with attached belt frog. The scabbard is in good condition, with with most of the original finish on the metal scabbard faded to a peppered patina. The leather frog shows age, and has as functional MASS marked rosette hinge. The leather portions are somewhat delicate, and now stiff. There appears to be a marking from WATERVLIET Arsenal on the back of the belt loop.

A very nice U.S. Trapdoor Convertion socket bayonet, complete with original scabbard. Ready to fit to your Springfield Trapdoor M1866 Converted Rifle!
