Original U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Converted to Flintlock Jezail Prop Gun 1939 “Gunga Din” Movie

Item Description

Original Item: Only One available. The Jezail (sometimes Jezzail from the Arabic) is a simple, cost-efficient and typically handmade muzzle-loading long arm commonly used in the Middle East region in the past. These were all highly personalized, so no two were alike.

This is a Jezail of sorts, and depending on how you look at it, is either a great piece of movie memorabilia, or a waste of what was a nice U.S. SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR in 45/70 Caliber. From what we can tell, it was a model 1873 Trapdoor carbine, and it still retains the original saddle ring bar and one ring.

The carbine was disguised, or possibly ruined, as a working blank fire FLINTLOCK JEZAIL used by the Natives in this famous 1939 Movie Gunga Din, based on the poem by Rudyard Kipling. This movie had a strong cast, starring CARY GRANT, DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS JR, and VICTOR McLAGLEN. A hell of a good yarn with masses of action which we've all seen at least 25 times on TV Re-Runs.

Using the original stock , re-cut at the butt and inlaid with decoration. The working lock is covered in a Flintlock type hammer attached to the Trap Door hammer and a miserable cast attempt of a Frizzen and spring assembly to complete the illusion. Fore Stock whittled down with the same decoration as on the butt.

However, it still has the original markings visible on the breech block:

U.S.
MODEL
1884

The lock plate is also marked U.S. / 1884, and the receiver serial number 182625* is still visible as well, which indicates manufacture in 1882. This doesn't really match the breech block and lock, but these were purchased on bulk and reworked by the Film Armorers, so parts were swapped all over the place.

BEST OF ALL, an old luggage label very aged stating RKO #277 and GUNGA DIN #247 on one side. On the other side RKO in a circle, STUDIOS, BURBANK, CALIFORNIA. From a Movie Collector’s point of view, very interesting and maybe desirable. Company director Christian Cranmer is probably going to have to view the Movie yet another time just to see if I can pick it out.

A Genuine Movie Gun from a very famous Movie, Ready to display!
