Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is great example of the very hard to find Springfield Model 1896 Krag–Jørgensen Carbine. Unlike most examples, this was not upgraded later to 1902 standards, and still is in the original configuration as issued. It is a rifle that saw service during the last days of mounted cavalry, and it really is exceptional, due to the highly figured walnut stock it has.
We have researched this particular carbine, and the serial number 71150 falls between serial numbers 71143 and 71210, which are documented as being issued to the U.S. Army 6th Cavalry. Given the proximity of the serial numbers and the number of Krags issued to the 6th Cavalry, this 1896 Krag Carbine was most likely issued to the U.S. 6th Cavalry as well. For more information please see page 37 of Springfield Research Service’s SERIAL NUMBERS OF MARTIAL ARMS VOLUME 1.
The carbine measures approximately 41 inches (1,042 mm) in overall length with a 22-inch (560 mm) barrel. The The Springfield Model 1892–99 Krag–Jørgensen rifle is a Norwegian-designed bolt-action rifle that was adopted in 1892 as the standard United States Army military longarm, chambered in U.S. caliber .30-40 Krag. All versions and variants were manufactured under license by the Springfield Armory between 1892 and 1903 and famously served as the longarm during the Spanish–American War. Although Krags were popular, unique and efficient, the side loading gate mechanism was slow and cumbersome to reload in combat compared to the clip loaded Spanish Mausers the Krag was up against.
The Model 1896 is an improvement over the original 1892 model. It had a magazine cut-off operated in the down position had a cleaning rod that was stored in the butt trap, which mean that even the carbine model would have a cleaning rod. The production tolerances were also improved, resulting in an overall better firearm.
Our example is stamped on the receiver:
Research reveals that serial number 71150 dates to year of manufacture of 1897, the first half of the year, which is part of U.S. Fiscal Year 1897. Springfield Armory produced 14122 M1896 carbines this year. All model 1896 rifles and carbines were produced 1898 and prior, and are federally considered antiques.
The Carbine Model 1896 features features the later bolt with the extractor with pin and the receiver is machined to work with the pin. The handguard meets the front edge of the receiver fitted with the correct pattern M1896 rear sight. This is surrounded by the correct hand guard, with the barrel band sight guard directly in front to protect it. The stock is fitted with a M1896 solid smooth buttplate with a curved toe and butt-trap, which is unfortunately empty. It still features the original 22 inch barrel, and has not been modified from the original issue configuration.
Metal condition is good, with much of the original finish present, and just a bit of wear and oxidation. The stock and handguard are in good condition as well, with the stock having a lovely aged dark brown color. It looks to possibly have been arsenal reconditioned, as the "boxed" stock inspection cartouche is very faint. It appears to read JSA / 1896, for inspector J. S. Adams, and the "P" overpressure proof under the wrist is still visible. It also looks to have just been lovingly polished for years, as by luck of the draw, this carbine is fitted with a VERY attractive flame figured walnut lower stock. The saddle ring fitting is in good shape, with an intact ring.
The bore is in very good condition, showing clear lands and grooves and a bright finish, with some light wear. The carbine cycles nicely, and appears to be fully functional.
A great chance to pick up a hard to find U.S. military carbine with a great lower stock! If you're in the market for a great looking carbine, this is it! Ready to display!
