Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting example of the very hard to find Springfield Model 1896 Krag–Jørgensen Carbine. It is a carbine that saw service during the last days of mounted cavalry, and this example looks to have been customized during and possibly after service to make it more accurate. It almost makes one think that one of Teddy Roosevelt's wealthy "Rough Riders" might have carried it while fighting in Cuba!
The carbine measures approximately 41 inches (1,042 mm) in overall length with a 22-inch (560 mm) barrel. The The Springfield Model 1892–99 Krag–Jørgensen rifle is a Norwegian-designed bolt-action rifle that was adopted in 1892 as the standard United States Army military longarm, chambered in U.S. caliber .30-40 Krag. All versions and variants were manufactured under license by the Springfield Armory between 1892 and 1903 and famously served as the longarm during the Spanish–American War. Although Krags were popular, unique and efficient, the side loading gate mechanism was slow and cumbersome to reload in combat compared to the clip loaded Spanish Mausers the Krag was up against.
The Model 1896 is an improvement over the original 1892 model. It had a magazine cut-off operated in the down position had a cleaning rod that was stored in the butt trap, which mean that even the carbine model would have a cleaning rod. The production tolerances were also improved, resulting in an overall better firearm.
Our example is stamped on the receiver (partly hidden by the sight rail):
Research reveals that serial number 67109 dates to year of manufacture of 1897, the second half of the year, which is part of U.S. Fiscal Year 1898. Springfield Armory produced 14122 M1896 carbines this year. All model 1896 rifles and carbines were produced 1898 and prior, and are federally considered antiques.
The Carbine Model 1896 features features the later bolt with the extractor with pin and the receiver is machined to work with the pin. The carbine features the correct front sight, attached directly to the barrel, with no fittings. However the sights for the rest of the carbine have been customized by the owner. The original Model 1896 rear sight and handguard were both removed, and a flip-up sight was installed right behind the sight protector barrel band. Additionally, a very nice aperture "peep" sight was attached on top of the butt stock, and has patent information on the top of it. Even more interesting, a very early pattern scope rail has been attached to the left side of the receiver! We do not know what type of scope this was intended for, but this is clearly an early pattern rail that we do not recognize at all.
The stock is fitted with a M1896 solid smooth buttplate with a curved toe and butt-trap, which actually still contains an original three piece cleaning rod! There also appears to be some cleaning patch in the lower compartment. It still features the original 22 inch barrel, and has not been modified from the original issue configuration.
Metal condition is good, with much of the original finish present, with areas of wear and light oxidation. The stock is in good condition as well, having a lovely aged dark brown color. It looks to possibly have been arsenal reconditioned, as the "boxed" stock inspection cartouche complete missing however the "P" overpressure proof under the wrist is still fully visible. The saddle ring fitting is in good shape, with an intact ring.
The bore is in very good condition, showing clear lands and grooves and a mostly bright finish, with some light wear. The carbine cycles nicely, and appears to be fully functional.
A great chance to pick up a hard to find U.S. military carbine with some very interesting customizations! Ready to display!
