Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This lovely carbine began life as a late-production (1898) Krag M1896 Rifle, the standard U.S. Long arm of the time. It was however then custom converted to a 24" barrel with a ramp fore sight and tall rear Krag Carbine ladder sight. It even has crosshatching on the butt plate to keep it more steady on the shoulder.
This was done very possibly as the request of a wealthy Officer who saw service in the Spanish American War of 1898 in Cuba. At that time in New York many wealthy individuals formed their own Units, including Teddy Roosevelt and William Tiffany which later became known as the "ROUGH RIDERS." Many of these Officers treated the war more as a Safari and used custom made rifles. Perhaps this very appealing example has its history within that group.
Our example is stamped on the receiver:
MODEL 1896. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 91760
Research reveals that serial number 91760 dates the time of manufacture to the very beginning of 1898, which is part of U.S. fiscal year 1898, just before the model 1898 was patterned. At that time the fiscal years started in July of the preceding year, which can make dating these rifles problematic at times.
The stock on this rifle is in very good condition, but it does show age and wear it has the usual scratches from age, and there are also some cracks on the left side, just above the trigger guard. Both sling swivels are present and in good shape. Action works smoothly and all components have a nice aged finish, with slight oxidation on the bright areas. Bore shows lands and grooves, with a mostly bright finish, though the lands are definitely worn. Probably rates a 7 out of 10.
A great example of the standard turn of the 20th century U.S. Service rifle, turned into a sporting carbine for further use. Ready to display!
