Original U.S. Spanish-American War Era Scare Non-Regulation Model 1895 Officer’s Cap Constructed of Straw With Illinois State Officer’s Buttons

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare cap! This cap is a Model 1895 Officer’s Cap that was constructed entirely out of straw. Darker color straw was added to the circumference of the cap to signify that it was an officer used item. The buttons on the side are the standard State of Illinois Staff Officer buttons, used to secure the twisted cotton chin strap. A total of seven infantry regiments and one artillery battery from Illinois participated in the Spanish-American War. Illinois Troops were stationed in Cuba and Puerto Rico, which is most likely where the cap was made. A total of 276 Illinois soldiers lost their lives during the war.

The interior of the cap is unlined and was most likely done so intentionally to better allow air flow to the head in a hot, humid environment. The condition of the cap is quite nice especially for the age and the fact that it is made out of straw. The cap still retains its original shape and does not appear to have been worn in the field. There is no extensive damage present and it displays itself quite well.

A beautiful example of a rare Non-Regulation M1895 cap that comes more than ready for further research and display.
