  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very scarce USMC uniform from the Spanish-American War era, a Model 1898 Khaki tropical uniform tunic. This Uniform dates from 1898-1904 period, and was first fielded by Marines in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. This has features of an early coat such as the small pocket flaps and early brass domed buttons (all marked PIPPY CO NY).

The tunic has a stamped name on the interior collar, which we can only read the last name of, Popple. This could indicate use by George Popple, who enlisted in August 1907 and served aboard the USS Louisiana during some of its voyage with the Great White Fleet (1907-1909) before being dropped off at Mare Island, California when he fell ill. We couldn’t find much else on his service, making this a good research project.

Specifications from this period are particularly murky, but from what we have found, this is an earlier pattern jacket. For some, these circa 1900 khaki coats are considered the “holy grail” for collectors of U.S. Marine Corps material.

The tunic is in wonderful condition and does show signs of wear in a hot, humid climate. There is staining present and the tunic itself presents itself as “salty” with a starch like feel to it. There is no extensive damage present and this is honestly one of the best we have seen lately.

Comes ready for further research and display.
