Original U.S. Spanish-American War Era Army Model 1889 Summer Tropical Sun Helmet With Original Chinstrap by Ridabock & Co - Size 7 ⅛

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. This is a fantastic Spanish-American war era sun helmet with very little staining present, a rarity! Included on the helmet is the original chinstrap which is another rarity in itself. Much like our European cousins in the 1880s, the U.S. Army started to adopt sun helmets, especially for use during the hot summer months. These saw active service in the Spanish American War of 1898, especially in the tropical climate in Cuba. While often called "Pith Helmets", the U.S. variety was usually made of cork material.

This helmet dates to just prior or during the conflict. It has a lovely off white color exterior, with the correct 4 panel construction and top vent cover. It still retains its original gray leather chinstrap and is presented in solid condition.

The interior is lined with green fabric under the brim, with khaki fabric inside the crown. The leather sweatband is still fully intact, and is still quite soft but slightly torn. The inside of the sweatband is marked with manufacturer and retailer information:

WM. H. HORSTMANN & CO.
PHILADELPHIA
RIDABOCK & CO., NEW YORK

Overall condition is excellent, but does show staining to the exterior, as well as light oxidation to the fittings.
