Original Item: Only One Available. This is something that we have only seen once before! Developed during the same period of American "multi-use" military experimentation that produced the Springfield Trapdoor ramrod and trowel bayonets, the 1880 Entrenching Tool was meant to be issued in lieu of a field knife and a shovel.
The tool measures 12 3/4 inches overall, with a 8 1/4 inch long and 3 1/2 inch wide blade. This is fitted with an upturned spine and a rounded steel guard bar at the base. The ribbed grip is branded U.S. on the obverse, as is the leather covered steel sheath, which has a brass top fitting fitted with a an iron hanger loop.
This example is in very good condition, showing some oxidation and staining on the blade, with minor dings on the wood handle. There are scuffs on the leather, which is a dark aged brown, with a great patina of age. There are a few areas of cracking, and the underlying metal can be seen. There is also a split area at the bottom of the scabbard with missing stitching and leather. These were typically used, abused, and in some cases thrown away by the troops they were issued to, so examples in any condition are rare.
