Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Spanish-American War Era Issue ammunition crate for .30-40 Krag cartridges, also referred to as 30 U.S. and .30 Army. The cartridge was developed in the early 1890s to provide the U.S. armed forces with a smokeless powder cartridge suited for use with modern small-bore repeating rifles to be selected in the 1892 small arm trials. The rifle ultimately selected for use by the Army was the Krag–Jørgensen, formally adopted as the Springfield Model 1892–99 Krag–Jørgensen Rifles & Carbines. The cartridge was also used in M1893 and later Gatling guns.
The crate measures approximately 19 1/2"W x 13"D x 7"H, and definitely looks to have seen long use after service, probably in a barn or a workshop where it was used to store things. The end of the crates is marked Brass casings 1/2 inch Shell, which does not really have anything to do with it's original purpose. The long sides however still show the original faint inspectors marks, as well as the listing of the contents:
1000 BALL CARTRIDGES
MODEL 1898 RIFLE
CAL. 30 ASSORTED
Condition is definitely well used, with cracks and other damage, which could be from use during service or afterwards. This would look great as part of any Span-Am War display! Ready to add to your collection!
