Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous souvenir of the Spanish-American War, a captured Mauser cartridge supposedly taken by Captain Francis A. Cook of the USS Brooklyn, which became famous for defeating the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. Not Available for Export.
The provenance envelope that comes with it reads:
Mauser shell + bullet from
Capt. Cook of the “Brooklyn”
Taken from one of Cervera’s fleet
After its defeat in Santiago Harbor
7/3/98
Cervera is certainly referring to Pascual Cervera y Topete, who led the Spanish fleet during the battle. This provenance is solid, and is repeated on another envelope included with the cartridge. The bullet of the cartridge has some rusting and verdigris, and it is stamped on the bottom D.M. 1897 K.. This is a really phenomenal souvenir from one of the most famous naval battles of the Spanish-American War. Comes ready for further research and display!
