Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 is a single shot hammerless falling block action rifle designed by Hugo Borchardt and made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company. It closely resembles older Sharps Rifle but has firing mechanism uses a hammerless striker rather than a hammer and firing pin like the old Sharps Rifle. It was the last of the Sharps single-shot rifles, and the Borchardt did not sell very well. Some 22,000 rifles were made in all models from 1877 till Sharps Rifle Co. closed down in 1881. The vast majority of these were military rifles.
This is a fine example of a totally original Sharps Borchardt Old Reliable Model 1878 Breechloading Military Rifle. Government .45-70 caliber, 32 1/8 inch round barrel, standard finishes and markings, original bluing with original walnut stock. There is a small repair to the right side of the butt stock where it meets the receiver. Also the ramrod is sadly absent, as is the front sling swivel. The bore is excellent, with a bright finish and clear lands and grooves.
The top of the barrel is marked "Old Reliable" in script and SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT. CONN. behind the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is marked:
BORCHARDT PATENT.
SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN.
with the serial number 16919 stamped on the underside. It is equipped with a square base blade front sight, military ladder rear sight and sliding trigger safety. Military style stock with two barrel bands and checkered steel butt plate making this a good example of an extremely hard to find antique gun!
