Original U.S. Sharps Borchardt Old Reliable Model 1878 Breechloading Military Rifle - Serial 18839

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 is a single shot hammerless falling block action rifle designed by Hugo Borchardt and made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company. It closely resembles older Sharps Rifle but has firing mechanism uses a hammerless striker rather than a hammer and firing pin like the old Sharps Rifle. It was the last of the Sharps single-shot rifles, and the Borchardt did not sell very well. Some 22,000 rifles were made in all models from 1877 till Sharps Rifle Co. closed down in 1881. The vast majority of these were military rifles.

This is a fine example of a totally original Sharps Borchardt Old Reliable Model 1878 Breechloading Military Rifle with the original rare cleaning rod. Serial number 18839, government .45-70 caliber, 32 1/8 inch round barrel, standard finishes and markings, original bluing with original walnut stock.

The top of the barrel is marked "Old Reliable" in script and "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT. CONN." behind the rear sight. The left side of the receiver is marked "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN." with the serial number 18839 stamped below. It is equipped with a square base blade front sight, military ladder rear sight and sliding trigger safety. Military style stock with two barrel bands and checkered steel butt plate making this a very fine example of an extremely hard to find antique gun!
