  • Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is an extremely rare and rather lovely M1824 Bell Crown. This style of hat was in use during the 1824-1835 period.

This is a very nice U.S. Militia bell crown "tar bucket" shako. Used by regular forces as well as militia units from 1820-1835. This very original example retains the eagle insignia. Shako retains a pressed leather rosette with star pattern militia button, white tuft plume, and eagle side rosettes. Nice arched drop in the back adds a more dramatic look to the overall form, and this example is unique in that it has a laced back for tightening to the head, very rare to see.

Overall shape is intact with a nice arched drop back still holding its overall shape. Typical crazing and expected period commensurate wear to the tarred black finish over pressed leather. Polished cloth lining is absent, with a solid leather sweatband and worn skull cap. The height is approximately 8 1/2" without the plume.

A lovely example ready for display.
