Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is an extremely rare and rather lovely M1824 Bell Crown. This style of hat was in use during the 1824-1835 period. This example is in outstanding condition with the original chinscales, cording that goes around both sides, the hat badge and cockade, and a great original plume with a Whale Baleine stem. This is the first example we have offered with its original plume.
This example retains an outstanding maker’s label reading:

This is a very nice U.S. Militia bell crown "tar bucket" shako. Used by regular forces as well as militia units from 1820-1835. This original example retains the eagle badge, which appears complete and is held in place by two pieces of leather. The shako retains a pressed leather rosette with star pattern militia button, and side rosettes with chinscales though the chinscales are a bit damaged with some scales missing. Nice arched drop in the back adds a more dramatic look to the overall form, and this example retains the braided cords that attach to the two sides, extremely rare to see!
The shako retains its original tall red plume which is attached at its base to a Whale Baleine stem, indicative of the period. With the plume attached, the shako measures a staggering 24” tall!
The shako retains its shape very well, and it is one of the best Tar Buckets we have ever offered.
The interior retains the leather sweatband along with two tags which appear to be old museum catalog tags, great to see!
One of the best shakos we have ever offered, ready for display.
