Original Item. Only One Available. This is a nice Seminole Wars period Contract Model 1818 NCO Sword with its scarce complete scabbard, made by Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut. Starr was the leading sword maker in America from 1798 to 1830, and his firm produced a variety of military edged weapons, which followed the evolution of early U.S. cavalry Sabers. As changes were requested over the period, new models were made, and new contracts issued to Starr, who remained the choice manufacturer up until the Model 1826 Naval cutlass.
The US Ordnance Dept. in December 1818 contracted with Nathan Starr for 4,000 such infantry NCO swords for use by the army. Delivered between 1819 and 1820, this Starr single-edged saber measures 30¾” long overall and has a 25¾” long, sturdy steel blade with an unstopped wide fuller that extends to 6” from the point.
The ricasso is horizontally stamped with:
N. STARR
U.S.
P
L.S.
The P stands for Proved, and the L.S. is the inspector, Luther Sage. This example still retains the very scarce leather blade buffer, but it is weak and worn. The iron and brass hilt is still tight to the blade, and the leather-covered wood grip is in great condition for its age without any significant loss. The P-type knucklebow joins a convex pommel that almost resembles a bird’s head shape.
The 26” long iron scabbard has much or the original japanned black paint. Has a small iron stud or finial tightly set into an iron lozenge-shaped disc secured to the upper body of the scabbard. There is a heavy amount of nicks in the edges of the scabbard near the tip on one side, with some heavy denting and scratches.
An outstanding example of a now 200+ year old American Non-Commissioned Officer’s sword, ready for further research and display!
