Original U.S. Revolutionary War Large Gunner’s Powder Horn with Plug & Original Suspension - Inscribed

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a large Cow Horn Powder Flask, measuring a staggering 20 inches in overall length. While possibly intended for a musket or other small arms, this size would often be used for cannon priming. The end of the horn is fluted in a pattern that matches the corresponding plug, and the plug is still attached to the original suspension. These are extremely difficult to find in this configuration.
This example has a large and deep inscription depicting a Heart with the initials W.A. and the year 1776, next to a larger inscription of LIBERTY. However, due to the aging of the inscription, we believe the inscription was professionally added much later than 1776, and was added to give the horn a great look. It certainly does give it a great look, but we are certain the inscription was not added during the original period. The horn still displays very well, and the original braided suspension is in great condition, although we wouldn’t recommend using it now.
