Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. Just purchased at a recent large military auction, this is straight out of the attic! Offered as is, this is a very nice French Charleville M-1763 style musket, much in the style of the muskets used by the Continental Army during the U.S. revolutionary war. Once as numerous as Brown Bess Muskets the French equivalent was referred to as the CHARLEVILLE Musket, and there were a multitude of versions over the years. However, Charleville was only one of the manufacturing Arsenals, the predominant one being Saint-Étienne.
Our example definitely looks to be correct for the revolutionary period. While somewhat shorter than the M-1763 usually is, it has the correct style lock, with an iron flash pan, which was replaced by brass with the M-1777 musket. This particular shape is also very characteristic of locks manufactured at the arsenal at Maubeuge. The hammer is the correct style, as is the lock plate, and it has been marked V. FORGE / 1775. There is also a P proof mark on the barrel. The lock is currently frozen, and we have not made any restoration or repair attempts.
The stock is the correct shape for a French Charleville, and has the correct upper and middle band secured by band springs, while the lower band is not. Both sling swivels are missing, however there is a ramrod, but it is a bit shorter than usually seen. The stock is in good unrestored condition, with no major issues we can see, and has the letters D. E. d. punched into the left side, which is not a marking we recognize.
Very nice and ready to display as is, or restore!
