Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. Here we have a very interesting weapon! Almost certainly the creation of a Colonial gunsmith, this Musket in .82" caliber started life in part as a very rare British Sea Service Musket. It was then made up together with other original parts to serve in the Colonial Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War.
The lock looks to be of Dutch or German make of the 1770s period, with all markings either removed or never added during production. The 42" barrel is a quarter octagonal and three quarters round, indicating that it was not from an issued military firearm previously having been used. These were mounted on a Walnut stock very similar to the British Sea Service Musket. It features all brass British Sea Service mounts of BUTT PLATE, TRIGGER GUARD with a circular front lug, FLAT TAILED BROWN BESS SIDE PLATE and TWO brass Sea Service RAMROD PIPES. The lower rear pipe is clearly a crudely Colonial made hammered brass throat pipe, since the British Sea Service Musket was issued WITHOUT any throat pipe whatsoever.
No visible markings on lock or barrel but the musket has been adorned with a charming HEART SHAPED ESCUCHEON or THUMB PLATE on the back of the wrist. It is in very good display condition, with the expected wear from age and long service. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full, though it fires somewhat slowly. There is some missing wood around the nose cap and some cracking around the lock plate and side plate.
An extremely rare Colonial Musket creation using whatever happened to be at hand at that time of Crisis of the early Rev. War years. Good overall condition ready to display!
