Original U.S. Revolutionary War Era Silver-Mounted Hunting Sword Cuttoe with Mother of Pearl Grip & Original Leather & Silver-Mounted Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a fantastic likely American-made hunting cuttoe sword from the Revolutionary War era. The sword features a gorgeous silver wire-wrapped Mother of Pearl handle and silver-mounted hilt with some beautiful artwork on the crossguard and on the pommel. The blade is engraved on the first 3½” of both sides with a rising sun. The name “cuttoe” is an anglicization of the French term couteaux de chasse, meaning “hunting knife.”

The sword has a 19¾” blade and is 25⅛” overall. There are a few small chips in the blade near the top and the false edge, with heavy oxidation across, but the blade is in great shape overall for its age.

The gorgeous carved mother-of-pearl grip is in great shape with the silver wire-wrap still well retained. The crossguard and grip are a bit loose to the blade, but this is normal for swords this old. The bottom of the pommel has some beautiful ornamentation etched on, all hand-done during the period.

The included leather-covered wooden scabbard is in good shape, with the silver fittings still well-retained. The leather is splitting along the seam but is still in fair condition. The two suspension rings are retained but the one on the throat appears brass and may be a replacement. It is truly difficult to find a sword from this period with its original scabbard, and this is a truly stunning example.

This is a gorgeous sword with a ton of history that requires a great deal more research!

Comes ready for further research and display.
