Original U.S. Revolutionary War Era Brass Framed French Style Tinder Lighter with Candle Holder - circa 1770

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. This came to light in the Northern regions of New York State when a derelict 1700's house was pulled down. From the style it appears to be French or American made following the French design, and is unmarked. It comes with its music stand style front legs and has a very pleasing checkered wood grip. It measures just about 5" in length and 4" in height. The internal and functional components are made of the usual iron and steel.

These were first used as fire lighters by the flint striking a spark on the frizzen, which ignited the "tinder" in the trough or pan below. Tinder was usually fine shards of cotton or similar, sometimes soaked in oil, which was easily set afire with a spark. Once ignited the pan's now burning tinder was tipped into the laid fireplace to soon burst into a good blaze.

It also has a small iron candle holder (candlestick) on the right side, which would be used to hold a candle lit by the tinder. This could then be used to light other candles in the vicinity. It is also possible that these could be used as a primitive "flashlight". It seems to be fully functional, however we have not tested it for its ability to light tinder.

In very nice condition especially in light of its long lost storage. Ready to display!
