Original U.S. Revolutionary War British Short Land Pattern Tower Brown Bess Flintlock Musket marked to 62nd Reg't of Foot

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a stunning British "Short Land Pattern" Regimentally marked Brown Bess Flintock musket, featuring the 42" barrel first adopted by Dragoons 1740. In 1768 it became the standard infantry musket, and remained so until 1797, when the Third or "India Pattern" took over. This was the standard Musket of the line during the entire U.S. Revolutionary war, so there's a good chance it was involved.

This example has a lovely walnut stock, which still retains the "bannister rail" butt stock, a feature that was basically done away with after 1807. The musket has a full 42" regulation length, .75" smoothbore iron barrel, which bears British Proof Marks, which are still mostly clear. They include the British CROWN / GR / Broad Arrow and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS for manufacture in Birmingham, England. The stock is fitted with the correct FOUR ramrod pipes and correct all brass mounts. The barrel marked on the top with 62'D REG'T., for issue to the 62nd Regiment of Foot.

The "two screw" lock plate is fully marked with CROWN / G.R. mid lock for King George III, with TOWER marked on the tail. It also has the CROWN / BROAD ARROW "Lock Viewer's" marking under the flash pan. The lock surface has the correct curved profile of Pre-1777 manufacture, which later turned to be flattened. The lock has a swan neck cock, indicating pre-1808 construction. The lock is functional, though the springs are a bit weak, and it can be made to fire at both half and full cock.

The lovely all original walnut stock is complete with sling swivels and the correct iron ramrod. It has the correct "swell" just rear of the first ramrod pipe. It is really in great shape, showing only light handling marks and small chips in high wear areas. There are no repairs or major cracks that we can see. Really a fantastic example of a Brown Bess stock, probably one of the best we have ever seen.

The 62nd Regiment of Foot was first raised as the Second Battalion of the 4th Regiment of Foot on 10 December 1756, and then renumbered as the 62nd Regiment of Foot on 21 April 1758. The regiment saw service in the French and Indian War of 1756 - 1763 and were present at the Siege of Louisbourg in 1758 and the Battle of Quebec in 1759. Other parts of the regiment were assigned to Ireland, where they fought a French amphibious assault in 1760. In 1763, parts were sent to Germany to serve there, before going to the West Indies.

The Regiment returned to North America in 1776 to fight the French at TROIS-RIVIÈRES in June and the Battle of VALCOUR on 1st October 1776. They were then transferred to the command of General JOHN BURGOYNE, who surrendered his entire Force to the American Rebels at THE BATTLE OF SARATOGA in 1777. A sad day for Poor KING GEORGE III, who greatly regretted the loss of his American Colonies. The Revolutionary war was eventually concluded at the Treaty of PARIS in 1783.

An original amazing 42" Short Land Musket with a nice Revolutionary War History. Ready to research and display!
