  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstanding piece from the American Revolutionary War era. This gorgeous American officer’s “Cutting” hanger is in amazing condition for its age, and even retains the original brass-mounted leather scabbard. What’s more is that the blade is stamped with a crown over GR, denoting that it was a captured British blade mounted to an American hilt.

The cutting hanger sports a 24 1/2” mostly-straight blade which shows evidence of past oxidation being cleaned away, with a small chunk taken out near the ricasso on one side. Both sides near the middle of the blade are stamped with a Crown / GR, denoting British inspection during the era of King George III (1760-1820). The blade was originally on a British hilt, but it was captured, likely during the Revolutionary War, and modified with an American hilt. As a result, the hilt and its components are a bit loose, though there is no loss of structural integrity. Both sides of the ricasso are inscribed with museum catalog code NCO1. This likely denoted it as an NCO sword.

The hilt has a great brass hilt with a pear-shaped crossguard. The grip is of gorgeous fluted ebony with some heavy cracks and scuffing. The pommel is of the pillow variety, with a hanging ring still retained to its side. The overall length is 29 ⅞”.

The 26 7/16” brass-mounted scabbard is in great condition for its age, with some heavy crazing and cracking to the leather, though the stitching is intact. The brass mounts are dented and the suspension ring is now gone.

A great example of an early American hanger with a captured British blade, ready for further research and display!

    Approximate Dimensions:
