Original U.S. Revolutionary War American Officer’s “Cutting” Hanger Sword with Stirrup Hilt & Brass-Mounted Leather Scabbard

Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstanding piece from the American Revolutionary War era. This gorgeous American officer’s “Cutting” hanger is in amazing condition for its age, and even retains the original brass-mounted leather scabbard. What’s more is that the two suspension rings on the scabbard retain small leather fragments of the original hanger!
The cutting hanger sports a 27” curved blade which shows evidence of past oxidation being cleaned away, and some minor sharpening along the edge. Both sides of the ricasso are inscribed with museum catalog code NCO2. The hilt has a great brass stirrup-style hilt, very popular among officers during the Revolutionary War. The grip is of gorgeous fluted ebony with no cracking we can see. The pommel is of the pillow variety, with a hanging ring still retained to its side. The overall length is 32”
The 27 ½” brass-mounted leather scabbard is in tremendous condition for its age, with the stitching mostly retained and the leather now a bit stiff. The throat is disconnected from the scabbard and comes off with no effort, and the middle mount is also loose. Both of these mounts retain a suspension ring, attached to which are small fragments of the original leather hanger, a rarity to find like this. The brass drag is still tight.
This is an outstanding example of a Revolutionary War era officer’s “cutting” hanger with the original scabbard. Ready for further research and display!
