Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Most unusual is this U.S. Revolutionary War Era Imported Flintlock Musket made by the famous Jacobus Tomson family of Gun Makers. This example is marked I. TOMSON / A LIÈGE on the lock plate, where "I" was used instead of a "J" in the fashion of the time. This family of makers operated in both Rotterdam in HOLLAND and Liège in BELGIUM.
The musket comes complete with its original Socket bayonet, which appears to be Regimentally marked. It features wonderful substantial BRASS mounts including FOUR Ram Rod pipes, a lovely large brass trigger guard, and a butt plate secured with large protruding iron screws, in the typical Dutch pattern of the time. It also has a simple nose cap and classic Dutch long scroll side plate. The back of the wrist has an unadorned oval thumb plate or escutcheon. Comes complete with period all iron swamp mouthed ram rod, which still has intact threads on the other end.
The bayonet is marked LN 58 which we are informed could represent some Colonial American Regiment. As with many flintlock weapons on hand, it was converted to percussion in the 1840's. This weapon is in outstanding condition. If you remove the bayonet the front of the barrel is still retaining its polished bright finish under where the original bayonet has stayed in place for maybe 250 years. We suspect this may have hung in a tavern with masses of smoke which turned the exposed metalwork dark brown as it now is. We cleaned the lovely stock and the original colors immediately leapt out for us to see.
A very rare Revolutionary Musket, converted to percussion giving its 1765 Maker's name. Very rare and ready to display!
