Original U.S. Remington Rolling Block Short Rifle in .43 Spanish Caliber with Brass Decorations - Serial 90122

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Remington Rolling Block rifle was a breech-loading rifle produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company). The action was extremely strong, and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s.

This is a very interesting "short rifle" example, which definitely looks to conform to the Model 1869 Egyptian contract, with the correct "rear facing" rear sight. Please note that in the pictures the sight was erroneously installed backwards. The receiver tang is correctly marked with the three line Remington patent information ending with an 1874 date, correct  for the Egyptian contract, which is worn away closer to the receiver:

[REMINGTONS ILION N.Y.] U.S.A.
[PAT. MAY 3D 1864 MAY 7TH JUNE 11TH] NOV. 12TH, DEC. 24TH 1872
[DEC. 31ST 1872 SEPT. 9TH 1875. JAN 12TH] MARCH 18TH 1874

There are no other markings except for the standard "U" marks on the barrel bands, though there are no other U.S. issue markings. We removed the butt stock, and both the receiver and trigger guard are marked with serial 90122. Aside from this, the rifle is virtually unmarked, except for a "CROWN" on the upper barrel band, and a "U" on the lower barrel band. It also has a very interesting sight hood on the front sight, which we have not really seen before. We have measured the bore and examined the bottlenecked chamber, and this rifle definitely looks to be chambered for .43 Spanish - Egyptian (11.15 x 57R Remington Spanish), the most common caliber these were made in. Perhaps this gun was part of the Egyptian 1869 Contract, but this gun NEVER SAW EGYPT!

No Egyptian gun ever looked like this condition we have ever seen and we bought 5,000 units from the Ministry of the Interior in Cairo in 1976. If this is an example of the Egyptian Contract, it stayed in a reference collection here in the United States, and never had any Egyptian markings added. It could just as easily have been intended for another Military Contract but it's not Spanish, Argentinian, Danish, Swedish or U.S. military that we can see. These would have all had various markings added and different types of sights as required by their contracts.

The short rifle over all shows an oxidized patina throughout the metalwork, with some faced to a lovely plum look, and it definitely shows signs of long service. The rear sight is the correct type, and is fully functional, and the rifle still has two sling swivels, however one has been added directly through the stock. It's possible that the rifle was shortened at some time in the past.

The action cycles correctly, with a crisp dry fire. The ejector presents when the breech is opened, though we have not tested it on spent brass. The bore is in very good condition, with a mostly bright finish showing clear lands and grooves. There is some wear on the lands and past removed oxidation, but overall it is in very good shape. The wood stocks show a lot of wear, and the butt stock has had piece of sheet brass hammered into into it and then bent over, a type of decoration we often see used by Native Americans.
