Original Item. Only One Available. Offered in lovely condition, this is a type of Remington Rolling block that we have seldom seen before! After the success of the Model 1868 and 1870 Spanish contract Remington rifles, the company began to manufacture a similar rifle, sometimes called the Model 1870/1874 or Model 1874 "Export" rifle. This was widely distributed throughout South America, and was the fore runner of the Model 1879 that was sold to Argentina under contract. After this, the standard "Export" model was updated with the changes made for the Argentine rifle. These were typical chambered in .50-70 "Government" for domestic sales, or the very popular .43 Spanish.
This is a really nice example of the Model 1879 export, one of the few that we have had that were not sent to Argentina. It does look to have seen arsenal reconditioned, and we had considered that it was an Argentine Mauser that had the markings scrubbed, however the barrel is an inch longer than the Argentine contract called for. We do not know what countries this particular example were usually marketed to.
The receiver tang is correctly marked with the three line Remington patent information, which are still mostly crisp:-
REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A.
PAT. MAY 3D 1864 MAY 7TH JUNE 11TH NOV. 12TH, DEC. 24TH 1872
DEC. 31ST 1872 SEPT. 9TH 1875. JAN 12TH MARCH 18TH 1874
The location on the wrist of the rifle makes these markings very prone to being worn, often to the point that they are completely illegible. There are no other identifying markings on the exterior of the rifle, correct for the "export" model, as it was intended that the countries that purchased them would add their own markings. The left side of the barrel at the woodline is marked “B”, however we do not know the significance of this marking. We have measured the bore and examined the bottlenecked chamber, and this rifle definitely looks to be chambered for .43 Spanish (11.15 x 57R Remington Spanish). We removed the butt stock, and the receiver is marked with serial number J 4898, while the trigger guard has H 11832 marked on it. We assume that it was swapped at arsenal, possibly as part of a reconditioning.
The rifle is complete with its ramrod and ladder back sight (very similar to a Werndl back sight), and is in good shape, having had an arsenal reblue at some point. The barrel bands are in really great shape, with the correct U markings, and both sling swivels are present and fully functional.
The action cycles correctly, with a crisp dry fire. The ejector presents when the breech is opened, though we have not tested it on spent brass. The bore is in very good condition, with a mostly bright finish showing clear lands and grooves. There is some wear on the lands and past removed oxidation, but overall it is in very good shape. The wood stocks are in excellent condition, with a lovely red brown color, and no major damage or other issues.
A very good example of the Remington Model 1879 "Export" Rolling Block Rifle, ready to add to your collection!
