Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Originally patented in 1858, the Remington Model 95 Pocket Pistol became very popular on the River Boats of the great Mississippi river beginning in the 1870's. They were often used by gamblers and others who would require protection on the often dark decks. Having just a 3" barrel and 4 3/4” overall, these was ideal for a waistcoat pocket.
Like most, this example was originally fully nickel plated, which is still retained in many areas. The rest has flaked away, and the underlying steel now has a lovely aged patina. This is a pistol that saw quite a bit of use, and it comes in a fantastic custom wood case, made from part of a tree, cleaned up and cut in half. with a hinge at the top. The case measures 10" x 6 1/4" x 3", and is heavily varnished on the interior.
The pistol comes with three sets of grips, allowing the owner to choose how much "bling" they wanted at any particular type. These include the original "gutta percha" checkered grips, a set of mother of pearl grips, and a magnificent set of carved bone grips, which have eagles on both sides.
There are several securing screws included as well, though one is too short to work with any of the included grips. These would usually be custom fitted to a specific set of grips, as some were like the bone grips, and did not allow the end of the screw to protrude.
The barrel top strap on the pistol bears a clear the Remington Address:
REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.
The nickel plate on the pistol is still retained at about 60% and overall has a lovely worn patina. We see many of these with the plating completely missing, so it's definitely a bit ahead of a typical example. We have not attempted any cleaning of the bare steel portions, leaving the lovely dark gray patination they have.
A lever on the right of the pistol side releases the barrel, which flips upwards for extraction and reloading. There is even a nice manual extractor on the left side of the pistol, which is still functional. This also shows serial number 152 on the bottom of the barrel, which matches the number under the grips on the left side. The hammer has a rather ingenious mechanism that moves the rimfire firing pin up and down alternately, so only one barrel fires at a time. It appears to function correctly, but we have not verified this. The bores do show significant use, with the rifling faint and oxidation on the interior. These were made for corrosive black powder rounds, and this pistol looks to have seen significant use.
Found in many, many Western Movies these have become an old CLASSIC OF THE AMERICAN WEST. In splendid condition, complete with a custom wood case and three sets of grips. Very nice and ready to display!
